Start With Your Skill Level

Your experience on court is the single biggest factor in choosing the right racket. A racket that works brilliantly for a tournament player will feel terrible for someone who picked up padel three months ago.

If you're a beginner, you want forgiveness. That means a large sweet spot (round shape), softer core, and moderate weight. When you're still learning to hit the centre of the racket consistently, a forgiving racket makes the learning curve gentler and keeps the game enjoyable.

If you're intermediate, you've got consistent strokes and you're ready for a racket that gives you more options. Teardrop shapes work well here because they offer a bit of everything. You can start playing with spin and power without sacrificing the control you've built.

If you're advanced, you know what you want. You're choosing between specialised control rackets and power rackets based on your specific playing style. The racket becomes a tool that complements your strengths.

Shape Matters More Than You Think

Weight and Balance

Padel rackets typically weigh between 355g and 385g. That 30-gram range makes more difference than you'd expect.

Lighter rackets (355-365g) are quicker to swing, easier on your arm, and give you more time to react at the net. If you play a lot or have any history of elbow issues, lean lighter.

Heavier rackets (370-385g) generate more power on drives and smashes. The trade-off is speed and manoeuvrability. Your arm has to work harder, especially in long matches.

Core Material

The core is the foam inside the racket, and it affects how the ball feels when it hits.

EVA Soft gives a softer, more cushioned feel. Better touch, more comfort, easier on the arm. Great for control players and beginners.

EVA Hard is denser and more responsive. The ball leaves the racket faster. Better for power players who want a crisp, reactive feel.

FOAM (polyethylene) is the softest option. Maximum comfort and feel, but less power. Common in beginner rackets.

If you're unsure, EVA Soft is the safest all-round choice. You can always move to a harder core later when you know what you want.

Surface Material

The face of the racket is usually carbon fibre or fibreglass, sometimes a mix. Carbon gives more power and a stiffer response. Fibreglass offers more flex and a softer feel. Higher-end rackets use different carbon weaves (3K, 12K, 18K) for varying levels of stiffness and spin potential.

For most players, this isn't the deciding factor. Focus on shape and weight first, then let the surface material be the tiebreaker between two similar rackets.
